Prakash Radhakrishnan, Ph.D., recently received the UNMC Postdoctoral Scholar of the Year Award for 2011.
Post doc scholars such as Dr. Radhakrishnan are key players in the UNMC research enterprise. As part of the award, Dr. Radhakrishnan receives a $1,000 award to support his work.

Describe your research in lay terms.
Pancreatic cancer, the fourth-leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., has very poor prognosis. Signs and symptoms of the disease may not be detected until quite advanced and surgical removal has limited success. Patients typically survive only months after diagnosis. To address this daunting challenge, I focus on developing a carbohydrate-based early detection method.
To treat a disease effectively, it is important to understand the underlying cause of its progression. In view of this, I also do research to understand the mechanism of mucin glycan-mediated pancreatic cancer growth and metastasis.
What are your goals as a researcher?
As a researcher, my goal is to contribute to the understanding of how pancreatic cancer develops and how it can be detected early in disease progression to aid in increased survival of pancreatic cancer patients.
What has been the best part of your experience as a postdoc at UNMC?
UNMC is a well-respected institution that allows me to work in a stress-free environment and to think freely and contribute perennially to the institute's growth. My previous work with Dr. Pi-wan Cheng in the department of biochemistry and molecular biology equipped me with a strong background to continue with my current research. I am establishing myself to be a cancer researcher under the supervision of world-renowned cancer glycobiologist, Dr. Michael Hollingsworth. His mentorship is thought provoking and nurtures me to achieve my career quest. I appreciate the opportunities Dr. Hollingsworth and UNMC have provided me.
