Vocal cord dysfunction topic of Feb. 24 Lincoln Science Cafe

Vocal cord dysfunction is the topic of the next Lincoln Science Café at 7 p.m. on Feb. 24 at Brewsky’s, 201 N. 8th St., in Lincoln.

Vinay Mehta, M.D., an allergist with Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Associates, P.C. in Lincoln, will discuss what vocal cord dysfunction is, how it is diagnosed and treated. Dr. Mehta also will discuss the difference between asthma and vocal cord dysfunction and how it impacts athletes.

Dr. Mehta received his medical degree from the University of Sherbrooke in Canada and completed a residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and a fellowship in allergy-immunology at Creighton University.

He is a fellow of the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology where he serves on several committees. Dr. Mehta also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Allergy & Therapy.

A long-term sufferer of allergies himself, Dr. Mehta is acutely aware of the significant impact that allergies can have on a person’s quality of life. He is a strong advocate of early diagnosis and intervention. Dr. Mehta is a diligent patient advocate committed to helping patients take charge of their health and also is active in promoting community awareness through public forums and community-sponsored events.

This café is a partnership with the speech-language department at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln. Light appetizers will be provided by the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures.

Science Cafés involve a face-to-face conversation with a scientist about current science topics. They are open to everyone (21 and older), and take place in casual settings like pubs and coffeehouses. Each meeting is organized around an interesting topic of conversation. A scientist gives a brief presentation followed by a question and answer period.
