On Wednesday, U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer toured The Nebraska Medical Center Emergency Department, followed by a briefing on the defense-related research being conducted at UNMC. Sen. Fischer is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Photographed, from left, are: Shelly Schwedhelm, director of emergency, trauma and disaster services at The Nebraska Medical Center; Sen. Harris Frankel, M.D., assistant professor, neurological sciences, has been named to the board of directors of CoOportunity Health, a new nonprofit health insurance cooperative that can now sell coverage in Iowa and will soon have the same authority in Nebraska. Based in Des Moines, CoOportunity Health will be acting like an insurance exchange to sell policies to people seeking coverage under the federal Affordable Care Act.
