Dr. Liu will assume this new role on July 1; he will be taking over from Myrna Newland, M.D., professor of anesthesiology in the College of Medicine, who retires on June 30.
Dr. Liu is a career educator and child psychiatrist at UNMC. He serves as the psychiatry clerkship director in the College of Medicine and the medical director of the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska, a state-funded interprofessional education and workforce center.
He has expertise in pediatric mood disorders and is a frequent commentator on media programs related to child mental health.
Dr. Liu completed his undergraduate training at Northwestern University, his medical school degree and adult psychiatry residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center, and his child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Hospital.
Dr. Liu is interested in innovative e-learning and is a graduate of the UNMC Technology in Educational Scholarship (TiES) Program. He co-chairs a national task force of 11 medical schools developing simulated psychiatry cases for medical students and also co-chairs the national Training & Education Committee for the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.
He is a recipient of the UNMC Department of Psychiatry's Flint Award for Educational Excellence as well as national teaching awards from the Association for Academic Psychiatry and the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry.
Dele Davies, M.D., vice chancellor for academic affairs, congratulated Dr. Liu on his new role and lauded Dr. Newland for 45 years of extraordinary service to UNMC and 15 years in the role of director of faculty development programs.
UNMC faculty development remains in good hands. Dr. Liu is the ideal choice to lead 'the education of educators.'
