UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., received the 2013 Tongji University Medical and Life Sciences Achievement Award at the Fourth Annual Shanghai Sino-US Family Medicine Symposium & Faculty Training Session. The presentation took place on Tuesday at Tongji University in Shanghai. Ken Bayles, Ph.D., (left) associate vice chancellor for basic science research, accepted the award on Dr. Maurer's behalf. Gang Pei, Ph.D., president of Tongji University, made the presentation. UNMC and Tongji University are partners in the Shanghai-U.S. Health Science Initiative (SSUHSI), a collaborative health science partnership that involves educational, clinical and research components.

Dawn Venema, Ph.D. Sara Bills
Dawn Venema, Ph.D., and Sara Bills, of UNMC's department of physical therapy education, were honored by the Nebraska Physical Therapy Association (NPTA). Bills received the PT Clinical Excellence Award, and Dr. Venema received the Achievement in Education award. The awards were presented on Sept. 28. The NPTA is the principal membership organization for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants in Nebraska.

Vipul Shukla
Vipul Shukla, a Ph.D. candidate in the lab of Runqing Lu of the UNMC Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Anatomy, recently was first author on a published article in Blood, a major journal. Additionally, the article was highlighted in the same journal by the editors in a "comments" section where very well-known, leading experts in the field discussed Shukla's insights.

Turn in your unused or expired medication for safe disposal Saturday as part of National Take-Back Initiative for Unused and Expired Medication. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.
