Education is one of the four pillars of UNMC's mission and our students are the lifeblood of that aspect of campus life.

In UNMC Today's Student Spotlight, we get to know some of these students, who will become tomorrow's health care professionals.

Today we meet:

  • Name: Molly McCarthy
  • Hometown: Omaha
  • Program/Year: Ph.D. program in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research, College of Public Health/first year.

List three songs on your playlist.
I listen to the classical station and National Public Radio, but I love a cappella renditions of pop music and enjoy various punk and rock bands.

What sparked your interest in public health?
I took a class during my undergraduate career at UNO called "Human Biology and Social Inequality" which sparked my interest in social determinants of health and disparities in sexually transmitted infections in Douglas County, Nebraska.

Your favorite study snack is:
My new favorite snack is raisin rosemary crackers, Havarti cheese, and dried figs from Trader Joe's. I like to have a lot of snacks with me all of the time because I have an enormous appetite.

Your favorite app is:
Google Maps. I'd be lost without it.

Three things people may not know about you.

  • I have an 11-month old son.
  • I love traveling and have a particular affinity for tiny islands.
  • When I was a teenager, I wanted to be a contortionist or an orthodontist.
