Grants:
  • January 2005: $227,459, from the Jacob and Valeria Langeloth Foundation of New York, New York, in coordination with the UNL Department of Anthropology and the Nebraska Foundation, for the implant treatment of 20 Sudanese refugees in the State of Nebraska who have mandibular anterior partial edentulism due to previous forcible, ritual extraction as children in their native country. This project also represents a collaborative effort with the Department of Behavioral Sciences of New Mexico Highlands University, the Department of Linguistics of the University of Texas at Arlington and the Central District Health Department in Grand Island, Nebraska.
  • May 2003: Over $15,000 in components and training support received from Straumann/ITI implants for startup of patient implant care at the Veteran’s Affairs Dental Clinic in Lincoln, Nebraska (requested and received in conjunction with the efforts of Dr. Dan Assad and Dr. Edward Greene). This action also supported the College of Dentistry’s Postgraduate Periodontal Residents.
  • September 2002: Over $14,000 in components and services (along with additional private donations of funds) received from the Nebraska Chapter of the International College of Dentists, NobelBiocare, USA and Dental Designs, Inc Laboratory for support of the college’s dental treatment of Sudanese refugees in Nebraska with endosseous implant therapy. This project also received a great deal of publicity for the dental college on 3 television programs, National Public Radio, Nebraska Public Radio, and numerous national and international newspapers and magazines, including the front page of the US, Asian and European editions of the Wall Street Journal. This project and the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry were again featured in an article appearing in the May 2004 issue of Dental Practice Report.
  • Oct 2005-Jan 2011 Member of multi disciplinary team of investigators which was awarded 5-year NIH Grant of $1,300,000 (NIH Grant # NGA 1R25RR022707-01), a Science Education Partnership (SEPA) Award by the National Center for Research Resources of the National Institutes of Health. The grant project is entitled Breaking Barriers: Health Science Education in Native American Communities. Only two institutions were awarded this type of funding in 2005 - Harvard University, and the University of Nebraska. As part of this project, I am also on an Advisory Board which meets with the leaders of the Aberdeen Area Tribal Chairman’s Health Board, covering four States, to target Native American students in grades K-8.
