The combined 55 Medical Group/University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) Family Medicine Residency Program is a three year training program for active duty USAF physicians based at the 55 Medical Group (55 MDG). There are eight resident training slots in each year of training to make a maximum of twenty-four active duty USAF residents. Two-year training slots exist for AF General Medical Officers (GMO’s) or Flight Surgeons who are interested in completing their post-graduate medical education in Family Medicine. In addition, Offutt is unique in that we offer every year a training billet for a resident to select an Operational Training option which allows them to complete the FMR program and be guaranteed a Flight Medicine assignment at the end of their training. USAF Family Medicine residents are assigned empanelled continuity patients at the 55 MDG, and have responsibility of managing these patients throughout their training. The outpatient experience with continuity patients is the core of Family Medicine resident training. Residents are mentored and supervised by
nine Family Medicine Residency faculty and a licensed social worker. We give high priority to the care of our patients, training our residents to meet the needs of the Air Expeditionary Force and medical readiness requirements, and excellence in medical practice and scholarship. Our program will prepare you to fulfill your role as an active duty USAF family physician, trained to meet the challenges of today's and tomorrow's Air Force.
The 55 MDG-based Family Medicine Residency is fully integrated and affiliated with the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) Family Medicine Residency and as such graduates receive certificates from both the USAF and UNMC. There are approximately 60 civilian Family Medicine residents participating in the UNMC program. Together, the 55 MDG/UNMC program is the second-largest family medicine residency in the nation. The UNMC-EBC program is unique in the USAF in that it is a combined civilian-military program based in a university setting but with a rural training emphasis. This program allows the AF residents to receive training in not only the most sophisticated and modern medical and surgical services via the University of Nebraska Medical Center, but also in a rural practice setting that is perfectly suited to match the environment that the vast majority of AF Family Medicine providers will be practicing in during their AF career.
Active duty USAF and civilian family medicine residents rotate through both core and elective rotations at the 55 MDG, UNMC, Department of Defense facilities, local hospitals and at rural sites. Residents also receive didactic teaching at all sites, to include two half days of teaching per month, and Family Medicine Grand Rounds on a weekly basis at UNMC. USAF residents also participate in Military Specific Curriculum that prepares them to meet the challenges of practicing family medicine in today's USAF. Residents are introduced to the different USAF career opportunities for family practitioners. Leadership and military customs/courtesies are stressed to prepare USAF residents to be outstanding military officers. AF Residents are required to attend the "Combat Casualty Care Course", and training billets are made available to attend the Aerospace Medicine Primary Course. Opportunities also exist for resident participation in wilderness and other operational rotations. Our program also places high priority on preparing residents to perform the wide array of surgical and non-surgical procedures that are readily performed by family practitioners.
