The Family Medicine Residency at Offutt AFB began in July 1982 as a joint program with Creighton University. The original purpose of the program was to train experienced USAF physicians in the field. Residents were given advanced standing for prior postgraduate medical education, and entered the program at the second year level (PGY-2). When the Family Medicine Residency at Carswell AFB closed in July 1992, the Offutt AFB residency was chosen for expansion to a full three-year program. A decision was also made to switch affiliations to the University of Nebraska Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program beginning in July of 1992. The program originally had four residents enter in their first year, and eight residents in both second and third year levels. The program has now grown to include
nine residents in each year. The
Residency Review Committee (RRC) accredited the program for the maximum time
period of five years in 1994,1999 and 2005. FMR
