The majority of your time during the student clerkship rotation will be spent seeing patients with one of the residents or faculty . Additionally, approximately two to four half-days will be spent seeing patients scheduled into your own clinic. You will be required to present these cases to a faculty member. These patients will be scheduled one per hour to allow enough time for a thorough evaluation, reading and study and for presentation and teaching with the preceptor. You will learn how to manage both acute problems, such as upper respiratory tract infections, acute gastroenteritis, and chronic problems, such as diabetes, coronary artery disease, and hypertension. Time is also scheduled for you to observe residents and faculty members evaluating their own panel of diverse patients.
To round off your family practice outpatient clinic experience, you will have the opportunity to observe and assist with many procedures performed by staff and residents, such as dermatological surgeries, colposcopies, vasectomies, exercise treadmill tests, and colonoscopies.
During your month here, you will be expected to give a presentation at one of our noon Teaching Series conferences . This presentation can be on any topic you encountered during your clerkship. You will work with one of our faculty, the Medical Student Coordinator, to approve the topic and schedule the time for the presentation.
