THE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

UNMC's family practice residency is well established. It originated in 1969, the year family practice was first designated a medical specialty.

The program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and each year accepts approximately 26 residents in various tracks. Over the past five years, all of our graduates have attained board certification.

Our family practice faculty blends youth and experience. The 33 full-time physician faculty members are all board-certified and residency-trained. Many come from a background of private practice and some have special skills in geriatrics, preventive and stress medicine, sports medicine and business management.

The faculty also includes five Ph.D.s, with degrees in Marital and Family Therapy (2), Preventive and Stress Medicine, Medical Education and Medical Sociology, along with faculty specializing in counseling, social work, patient education, nutrition and clinical pharmacology.

We train physicians for the current and future needs of family medicine.

In addition to the standard rotations, other educational opportunities include family practice grand rounds and a structured series of half-day conferences covering a multitude of topics pertinent to family physicians. Research programs both within and outside the University are available to those of you interested in this vital aspect of family medicine.

Perhaps most important is our attitude toward curriculum. We're flexible. We continually seek new educational opportunities for our residents, and we're open to new ideas. If you want an international experience, further experience in procedural medicine, or more extensive exposure to the ICU, it's available.
