The Section of Nephrology is committed to 3 primary goals 1) provide state of the art care to our patients 2) train nephrologists and internists 3) build strong basic and clinical research programs. To this end, our programs are designed to achieve these goals.

Faculty within Nephrology have diverse clinical interests, with expertise in the following areas:

  • acute kidney injury
  • diabetic kidney disease
  • chronic kidney disease and its complications
  • in-center and home hemodialysis
  • peritoneal dialysis
  • hypertension, including difficult to control and refractory hypertension
  • kidney transplantation
  • glomerulonephritis, including kidney injury related to autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosis
  • disorders of calcium, phosphorous and mineral metabolism
  • complex electrolyte disorders
  • complex acid-base disorders
  • anemia of chronic kidney disease

Faculty within the Section of Nephrology are consistently rated as the top educators in Internal Medicine, and in collaboration with members of the Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology perform clinical and basic research in cardiovascular disease in dialysis and transplantation, clinical transplantation, anemia of chronic kidney disease, acute renal failure, diabetic nephropathy, and the renin-angiotensin system.
