RefWorks/Write-n-Cite Access Problems Friday 4/24

If you are having trouble accessing Refworks or Write-n-Cite this afternoon (Friday 04/24/09) or evening, your troubles may be due to a problem with one of RefWorks' servers.    RefWorks and Write-n-Cite open in an internet browser (either IE, FireFox or another browser).  If you are opening Refworks in IE or if Write-n-Cite is trying to open in IE, try closing all your open IE windows and then try starting Refworks or Write-n-Cite again.  Chances are that your next attempt to open RefWorks or Write-n-Cite will go a different RefWorks server.  (If this doesn't work the first time, try closing the browser windows again and then try starting RefWorks or Write-n-Cite again).    The RefWorks tech support people are working on the problem server and expect the problem to be fixed soon.

"Secure Connection Failed" warnings in Firefox

Here are the steps that are needed to gain access to several library resources (including RefWorks) when the Firefox "Secure Connection Failed" warning appears. When the "Secure Connection Failed" message appears while you are trying to access a Library resource, click on the "Or you can add an exception" link. 2) The display will change slightly. Click on the "Add Exception" button that appears. 3) The "Add Security Exception" dialog box will appear.   Click on the "Get Certificate" button. 4) The display will change slightly. Click on the "Confirm Security Exception" button. 5) When you click on RefWorks in the future, you may be warned about the bad security certificate and, if prompted, should click the button or link that indicates your desire to continue to the website.

Interlibrary Loan Launches McGoogan Docs

Starting July 1, the look and feel of the Order Articles forms on the McGoogan Library of Medicine's Web site will change. The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Department is excited to introduce its new ordering system, McGoogan Docs. Utilizing the ILLiad platform found at the other NU campuses, McGoogan Docs provides you with an integrated system for ordering and retrieving requests.

McGoogan Docs is similar to the current system in that you access your account via username and password. There also are similar forms for requesting articles, books and book chapters. The similarities end there. With McGoogan Docs, you will be able to:

  • Add multiple cost centers or billing methods to your account;
  • Cancel or edit requests without having to contact the ILL staff;
  • Specify your contact preference;
  • Specify whether or not you actually want a non-English language article;
  • Retrieve requested copies of articles and book chapters directly from your account, so you will know exactly which requests have been filled;
  • Check the status of your request;
  • Renew a loaned book without having to contact the ILL staff; and
  • Review a list of all of your past requests.

Links to the new system on the library's Web site will be changed the afternoon of June 30. To use the new system, you must create a new username and password. The username and password from the previous system will not be transferred, nor will past requests. This system is not integrated into the campus UNMC Net ID (e.g. Lotus Notes, Blackboard, etc.), but it is suggested that you use your Lotus Notes username when registering, as it is possible that one day McGoogan Docs may be able to use that logon information.

If you request items on the behalf of someone else, you will need to create a separate account for each individual that you order for. A single McGoogan Docs account cannot currently accommodate multiple aliases.

To learn how to use the McGoogan Docs system, view tutorials linked from http://unmc.edu/library/guides/ill/mcgoogandocs.htm

If you have any questions, contact Heather Brown (hlbrown@unmc.edu or 559-7097) or Mary DeSive (mdesive@unmc.edu or 559-6839).

UNMC PubMed Settings to Change

The process of linking to full text in PubMed via the library portal (www.unmc.edu/library - Medline/PubMed from the left menu) will become more streamlined in the upcoming weeks. There will be an icon on every abstract that says 'GetIt@UNMC'. This icon will take users to all linking options for full text for that article. If there are no immediate options available, the form will link the user to a prepopulated interlibrary loan form where the article may be requested for document delievery (appropriate charges apply). The gray/red icons that state 'UNMC Full Text' and 'UNMC Catalog' will no longer be visible on the abstract, as their functionality is now rolled into the 'GetIt@UNMC' process. Please note that the holdings tabs at the top of a search results screen will remain the same. These tabs list 'free full text' 'review articles' and 'UNMC Library Holdings' and will take the user to a collection of abstracts within the search results that fall under their respective criteria.

PubMed e-mail is not working

The "Send To" "e-mail" function in PubMed is not working.  An e-mail with introductory message is produced but no PubMed records are included in the received e-mail.  This is true for e-mail in .html and plain text formats and is true for messages sent to UNMC and non-UNMC e-mail addresses.  The PubMed technical support staff has been contacted.
