Dr. Hulme has taught in the Family Nurse Practitioner area at UNMC since 1998. Before coming to UNMC, she practiced in family planning and migrant health care clinics in Iowa, and managed health care services at a Job Corps center on the Texas border. Her career began as a hospital staff nurse and includes teaching undergraduate nursing in Minnesota,Texas, and Mexico. Dr. Hulme received her BSN from Pacific Lutheran University, her MSN from the University of Texas at Arlington, and her PhD from the University of Iowa. In addition, she holds an MA in anthropology from the University of Minnesota.
 

Teaching

  • Dr. Hulme has taught the following courses in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program: Advanced Health Promotion, Advanced Health Assessment, Advanced Primary Health Care of Families, Community Based Care for Vulnerable Populations
  • Dr. Hulme also teaches and helped develop Introduction to Global Health Care, a 1 – 4 credit course for graduate and undergraduate nursing students

Research/Scholarship

  • Overall focus: Long term health effects of childhood sexual abuse, and the relationship of HPA axis dysfunction to these long term health effects
  • Current study: Childhood sexual abuse, HPA axis, and bariatric surgery outcomes
  • Additional scholarship: Culture and evidence-based practice, Hispanic health issues

Practice

  • Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner since 1992
  • Currently engaged in faculty practice at Nova Therapeutic Center for alcohol and drug treatment
  • Practice from 1992 until present has been mainly with low-income populations in rural and urban settings in Texas, Iowa, Nebraska, and Nicaragua
