Grand Rounds & Seminars - November 2009

Biochemistry and molecular biology seminar Nov. 23 
Balakrishna Lokeshwar, Ph.D., professor and co-director of the division of urology research at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, will present "Regulation of Prostate Cancer Growth and Metastasis by Pro-Inflammatory Chemokines and their Receptors: New Avenue for a Cure" on Monday, Nov. 23 at noon in the Durham Research Center Auditorium, Room 1002.

Pathology and microbiology graduate student research seminar Nov. 24 
Ph.D. graduate student Yi Zou will present "Effect of Ron Tyrosine Kinase Knockdown on CXCR4 Expression and Metastasis in Human Pancreatic Cancer Cells" on Tuesday Nov. 24 at 9 a.m. in the Durham Research Center, Room 1004.

College of Pharmacy seminar Nov. 30 
Michael Klepser, Pharm.D., professor of pharmacy practice at Ferris State University, will be present a seminar on Monday, Nov. 30 at 3 p.m. in the College of Pharmacy, Room 1038.

Guoqing Lu, Ph.D., assistant professor in the department of biology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, will present "Understanding Influenza Virus and Evolution: A Bioinformatics Perspective," on Monday, Nov. 30 at noon in the Durham Research Center Auditorium.

College of Pharmacy faculty seminar Nov. 30  NEW!
Michael Klepser, Pharm.D.,professor of pharmacy practice at Ferris State University, will present "Optimizing patient care and expanding pharmacy practice on the frontline" on Monday, Nov. 30 at 3 p.m. in the College of Pharmacy, Room 1038.

Epidemiology chair candidate to give Dec. 1 presentation 
Dana Loomis, Ph.D., professor & director, School of Community Health Sciences, chair, Environmental & Occupational Health Program University of Nevada, Reno, will present "Epidemiologic Evidence on the Role of Fiber Size & Type in Asbestos Carcinogenicity" on Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. in the Sorrell Center, Room 2018. Dr. Loomis is a candidate for chair for the College of Public Health's Department of Epidemiology. Lunch provide to first 50 attendees. The seminar will be broadcast to UNL College of Dentistry, Room 52 and Aberdeen Area Tribal Chairman's Health Board.

Dana Loomis, Ph.D., professor and director of the School of Community Health Sciences, and chairman of the environmental and occupational health program at the University of Nevada, Reno, will present "Epidemiologic Evidence on the Role of Fiber Size & Type in Asbestos Carcinogenicity" on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. in the Sorrell Center, Room 2018. Lunch will be provided for the first 50 in attendance. The seminar will be broadcast to UNL College of Dentistry, Room 52 and the Aberdeen Area Tribal Chairman's Health Board. A live broadcast is available online. The seminar will be archived online.

Anderson final oral examination for the Ph.D. degree on Dec. 2 
Karen Anderson will present "An Intervention to Increase Physical Activity Behavior Among Older African American Women" for the final oral examination for the Ph.D. degree on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 1:30 p.m. in the College of Nursing, Room 4024.

Pharmacology and experimental neuroscience seminar Dec. 4 
Wallace Thoreson, Ph.D., will present "Mechanisms of Glutamate Release at the Photoreceptor Ribbon Synapse" on Friday, Dec. 4 at 9 a.m. in the Durham Research Center Auditorium.

Student presentations on Service Learning Experience Dec. 4 
Students involved in eight different service learning experiences will present project presentations Dec. 4 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Sorrell Center Auditorium, Room 3001. This inter-professional experience engaged UNMC and UNO students and faculty with eight community efforts in the Omaha metro area. Participants include UNMC Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and the School of Allied Health Professions. UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., will provide opening remarks.

New clinical research coordinators workshop on Dec. 1 and 7 
All new research coordinators are invited to participate in the Clinical Research Coordinators Workshop sponsored by the Clinical Research Center. The workshop is scheduled for Dec. 1 and Dec. 7. Participants will cover topics such as:
  • IRB overview;
  • Informed consent;
  • Patient recruitment;
  • Site monitoring visits;
  • Handling study medications and supplies;
  • Investigators responsibilities;
  • Budgets;
  • Using the charge master; and
  • The role of the research coordinator.

Chawnshang Chang, Ph.D., professor of pathology, urology and radiation oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, will present "Differential Androgen Receptor Signals Explains Why Androgen Deprivation Therapy of Prostate Cancer Fails" on Monday, Dec. 7 at noon in the Durham Research Center Auditorium.

Benjamin Gelman, M.D., Ph.D., will present "Two HIV-Associated Dementia's; two Pathophysiologies; two Therapies" on Friday, Dec. 11 at 9 a.m. in the Durham Research Center Auditorium.

UNL's Dr. Flores to present Dec. 14 environmental, agricultural and occupational health seminar 
Roland Flores, Ph.D., head of the food science and technology department and director of the food processing center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), will present "Developing value-added food products from Nebraska agricultural raw materials" on Monday, Dec. 14 at 4 p.m. in the Sorrell Center, Room 2018. The seminar will be broadcast to UNL's Hardin Hall, Room 901. Refreshments will be provided.

Genetics, cell biology and Anatomy Annual distinguished speaker seminar Dec. 16 
Michael Welsh, M.D., professor of internal medicine and molecular physiology and biophysics at the University of Iowa College of Medicine and professor of neurosurgery at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, will present "Insights From a Porcine Model for Cystic Fibrosis" on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 4 p.m. in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater.
