Mass casualty disaster exercise March 12 - volunteers needed
The Douglas County Emergency Management Agency (DCEMA) and Sarpy County Emergency Management Agency (SCEMA) in conjunction with the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) will be hosting a disaster exercise on Saturday, March 12. The goal of the exercise is to prepare the counties to respond in the event of a disaster. As a result, 350 pre-registered participants, age 18 and older, are needed to play the part of "patients." If you are interested, it entails the following:
1. Showing up at a designated place (you will be notified of this, by phone, one week prior to the drill) at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning, March 12. The exercise will end at approximately 4 p.m.
2. Some volunteers will be moulaged (given simulated injuries) and some will be participants in a mass immunization clinic. If you are willing to be moulaged (given simulated injuries) please check the box on the registration form. All volunteers will be briefed on the drill and given instructions on specific roles to be played.
3. You should wear old, comfortable loose fitting clothes, easily removable shoes. Those individuals agreeing to be moulaged will need to wear a bathing suit underneath their clothing. It is recommended that jewelry not be worn and purses/backpacks and other personal items such as cell phones, be left in your car or at home.
4. Once you begin the exercise you may not leave before you have been released unless you have an emergency situation arise. You must remain in your role the entire time you are involved in the exercise.
5. You will receive a Certificate of Appreciation for your participation.
Prior to the event, you will be given an orientation to the type of injury or symptoms you should simulate, and what actions are expected of you. Before, during, and after the event, liquids will be available to you. Lunch also will be provided for those participating in the exercise. Restrooms are available for your convenience. If you would like to participate, call 342-LINK (5465) ASAP to register, or you can e-mail jcurran@uwmidlands.org.
