M.D./Ph.D. scholars, grad student symposium Oct. 2 
M.D./Ph.D. Scholars and Graduate Student Symposium and Career Workshop is set for Monday, Oct. 2. This unique symposium and workshop is designed to assist in career development for M.D./Ph.D. students, graduate students and postdoctoral trainees. Speakers scheduled to present during the workshop include:
  • Teaching, Research and Patient Care; Can You Do All Three? -- Bernard T. Baxter, M.D., professor, Department of Surgery, UNMC

  • How to Get Your First Grant; What Skills Do You Need? and Demystifying the NIH Review Process --Rebbecca Moen, M.B.A., associate director, Office of Clinical Research, University of Minnesota Academic Health Center

  • The State of Federal Funding for Research -- Rebecca Osthus, Ph.D., science policy analyst, The American Physiological Society

  • Promoting Clinical and Translational Research: Recommendations of the AAMC Clinical Research Task Force II -- Howard B. Dickler, M.D., director of clinical research, Division of Biomedical and Health Sciences Research, AAMC

  • Careers in the Pharmaceutical Industry - A Personal Perspective -- Mark E. Dato, M.D., Ph.D., associate director, Experimental Medicine, Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals

  • A round table discussion on "Developing a Career as a Physician-Scientist."
The symposium and workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with breakfast and check-in between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. A social hour will follow at the end of the workshop in the Private Dining Rooms. To register, call 559-8242 or e-mail sacox@unmc.edu.
