Gem, mineral collections is Sept. 19 Smithsonian lecture 
"An Evening with the Smithsonian" lecture series continues Tuesday, Sept. 19, with the curator of the U.S. National Gem and Mineral Collection. Dr. Jeffrey Post will present "America's Crown Jewels: A Look at the National Gem and Mineral Collection" at noon in the UNMC Eppley Science Amphitheater. RSVP to Jill Carson at jlcarson@unmc.edu if you plan to attend the free lecture. The lecture is part of the medical center's Time Traveler's partnership with the Durham Western Heritage Musuem. The lecture also will be presented that evening at the museum. A reception and exhibit viewing begin at 5 p.m. with the lecture following at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Post will review one of the greatest collections of its kind in the world. The National Gem and Mineral Collection includes the world-famous Hope Diamond and the Star of Asia Sapphire and many other spectacular pieces from history as well. Dr. Post has served as curator of the U.S. National Gem and Mineral Collection since 1991. He served as the lead curator for the Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Geology, Gems and Minerals that opened in 1997.
