Native American Heritage Month celebrations at UNMC Nov. 19 and 21
The Diversity Lectures and Cultural Arts Series will present two events on the UNMC campus in celebration of Native American Heritage Month, which is November. The first event is a musical performance by Omaha Native and folk art singer, Michael Murphy on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at noon in the Durham Research Center Auditorium. Murphy has recorded five independent CDs; the most recent two- Trail of Tears and Peace. Along with his acclaimed guitar and native flute work on these albums, he is a very experienced singer and songwriter whose music often discusses socially conscious themes such as civil rights, peace and family values. The second event will be a panel discussion featuring native advocates and health care providers titled "Dispelling the Myths and Stereotypes: Native Culture and Health-Seeking Behaviors." This discussion, moderated by Dr. Donna Polk-Primm, executive director of the Nebraska Urban Indian Health Coalition, will be held on Friday, Nov. 21 at the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater from noon to 1 p.m. Free sack lunches for the first 40 attendees will be provided at both events as well as door prizes.
