The Mental Health First Aid training equips participants with the tools to recognize the signs of mental health concerns and the ability to respond confidently and effectively to those concerns. Participants will understand how to manage a mental health crisis and become familiar with the UNMC and community resources available to support those experiencing mental health struggles. This training is designed to help reduce the stigma of mental health concerns, show that recovery is possible, and allow participants to feel confident.Learning Objectives:
- Describe the purpose of Mental Health First Aid and the role of the Mental Health First Aider.
- Identify the impact of mental health challenges on the well-being of adults in the United States.
- Explain that recovery from a mental health challenge is possible.
- Describe the principles of safety and privacy for both the Mental Health First Aider and the person receiving Mental Health First Aid.
- Explain the 5 steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE).
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges that may impact adults. Evaluate the impact of early intervention on mental health challenges.
- Apply the appropriate steps of the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) when a person shows early signs of a mental health challenge.
- Apply the appropriate steps of the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) when a person shows worsening signs of a mental health challenge.
- Apply the appropriate steps of the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to crisis situations.
- Choose appropriate methods for self-care following the application of Mental Health First Aid in a crisis or non-crisis situation.
Accreditation
In support of improving patient care, University of Nebraska Medical Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
The University of Nebraska Medical Center designates this activity for 7.5 ANCC contact hours.
