Target Audience

Nurses and other health care professionals involved in ostomy care

Learning Outcomes

Differentiate types of ostomies during your assessment while considering ostomy appliance selection and other accessories.
Create a discharge plan incorporating strategies for effective ostomy education with patients utilizing resources for a smooth transition between settings or home.
Devise a care plan when assessing ostomy complications involving poor stoma location, high output, peristomal breakdown, ischemia, retraction, parastomal hernia, prolapse, or other common challenges as derived from case scenarios and role play application.
Demonstrate detailed ostomy documentation based on your assessment including pouching system, accessories, stoma size, output, stoma and peristomal appearance, and when to refer or notify the surgeon.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by University of Nebraska Medical Center and Midwest Chapter of the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society. University of Nebraska Medical Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center designates this activity for 6.0 ANCC contact hours. Nurses should only claim credit for the actual time spent participating in the activity.
