Below is a list of achievements, activities and happenings involving UNMC staff, faculty and students.

Cyrus Desouza, M.D., chief of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, will serve on the American Diabetes Association's National Professional Practice Committee for two years beginning in January. Part of the committee's charge is to set diabetes clinical practice guidelines for the ADA, which develops and disseminates diabetes care standards, guidelines, and related documents.

A smartphone application developed by the Munroe-Meyer Institute's Keith Allen, Ph.D., that will help children with autism communicate more effectively is being licensed by UNMC. The app focuses on evidence-based natural teaching procedures. BehaviorApp, LLC -- a Lincoln-based smartphone app development company -- will create the app, which could be available for use by March.

Lisa Jewell-Hardesty, director of the UNMC Youth Learning Center, will be featured in a WOWT Channel 6 story, scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 10 p.m. She and five others in the Omaha area will be recognized for outstanding contributions to the community. Jewell-Hardesty runs 22 different youth programs.

More than 100 people -- including state lawmakers and other community leaders -- gathered in the Durham Research Center Auditorium on Tuesday for the Second Annual Nebraska Children's Health Summit, sponsored by UNMC, Building Bright Futures and the Nebraska Child Health Alliance. The event focused on the protection and advancement of children's physical and behavioral health care services and the impact of a child's health on academic performance.
