  • Target Audience

    Health Care Professionals: nurses (LPNs/LVNS, non-baccalaureate, baccalaureate or Master's prepared), licensed health care providers (e.g nurse practitioners), physicians, physician assistants, physical therapists (PTs), physical therapist assistants (PTAs), military medics/corpsmen (active duty), certified first responders, and corpsmen, and other interested licensed clinicians who want more wound care knowledge.

    WTA Program

    The Wound Treatment Associate (WTA) Program was developed by the Wound Ostomy Continence (WOCN) Society. This evidence-based program was developed by internationally-recognized leaders and educators in wound management and prevention including hands-on training during the Simulation Day. Learners will complete a series of modules and a Simulation day within 12 weeks to improve wound prevention practices, patient outcomes, and expand a team's comprehension and skills in wound care throughout all healthcare settings (WOCN Society, 2017). Prepares nurses for a higher level of competency and knowledge including preparation for the WTA-C certification (not required).

    Overview of online WTA 12 - week session:

    • Online self-paced modules (14 Lesson Topics)... see sample 12-week schedule under the Materials Tab
    • Online self-paced program includes one VIRTUAL hands-on Mandatory Simulation Day as well as two phone calls, orientation and midway discussion, via ZOOM.
    • Two Online Exams (completed after Sim Day including an exam review with the CWOCN course coordinator)
    There will be a two phase Virtual Simulation Day scheduled at time of registration consisting of:
    • Scheduled 90 minute Virtual (via ZOOM) Competency hands-on Testing session
    • Student must obtain his/her own simulation patient (family member, friend, or colleague)
    • A Virtual Course Discussion and Exam Review will be held on Friday 8.2.24 from 1:00 to 3:30 for all students.

    VIRTUAL Simulation Day Competencies:

    • Wound Identification & Pressure Injury Staging;
    • Braden Pressure Risk Assessment & Development of Pressure Injury Prevention Protocol;
    • Performing and interpreting an ankle brachial index (ABI);
    • Sensory testing with a Semmes-Weinstein monofilament;
    • Application of a 2-layer, 3-layer, or 4-layer sustained compression wrap;
    • Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) (subject to availability)

    Accreditation
    • WOCN Society, an Accredited Provider for the ANCC: 32.25 nursing contact hours
    • Federation of State Board Physical Therapy (FSBT): ProCert awards PTs & PTAs 21.0 CCUs

    WTA Course Coordinator

    Renee Paulin MSN, RN, CWOCN is a Course Coordinator for the WTA Program hosted by UNMC College of Nursing Continuing interProfessional Development and Innovation (CiPDI) (UNMC CON CiPDI). She has over 14 years of experience as a registered nurse and has been a certified wound, ostomy, continence nurse (CWOCN) since 2010. Developing her ability in wound management including complex wounds and fistula care as well as prevention has always been her passion and she has supplied support and guidance to other nurses and patients within this specialty.

    Renee has the experience of managing an inpatient wound and ostomy care program under which her patients received meticulous care. She has supplied learning opportunities for health care professionals, including continuing interprofessional education to organizations in Nebraska including Omaha and rural areas, helping nurses to increase their knowledge and competency.

    Renee is the former president of the Nebraska WOCN affiliate and is a catalyst for the annual Nebraska WOCN affiliate conferences. Her leadership duties included organizing, planning, and executing NE affiliate events such as the Ostomy podcast for Nebraska nurses. She started the first Ostomy workshop with direct learning opportunities in Nebraska and worked closely with the Nebraska affiliate conference committee to present effective and meaningful conferences.

    Healthcare organizations, supervisors, and staff have commented about the wealth of knowledge and skills gained from the WTA program with Renee as the course coordinator. The wound and ostomy educational opportunities provided by NE affiliate of the WOCN Society and UNMC have been very impactful under Renee's leadership supplying clinicians the necessary tools and resources to improve confidence in wound management and ultimately improve patient outcomes.  

    Renee is an educational expert and her passion as an educator motivates her to encourage others to develop their talents and skills to educate others for the benefit of healthcare. She will continue to chair the NE affiliate WOCN conference and ostomy workshops and is currently working on her DNP at UNMC College of Nursing and continues to stay active within the affiliate.

    • Registrations are not considered final until payment has been received by UNMC. Session space is limited and is allocated based on actual payment date.

    Refund and Cancellation Policy

    • Refunds/Cancellations
      REFUNDS ARE SUBJECT TO THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS HEREIN. Requests for refunds must be made by email or in writing within 30 days from purchase date using the contact information found below. Refunds will be granted only if the course license(s) purchased has not been claimed. Claimed is defined as the use of the license issued to the purchaser to enter into the WOCN course system. Refunds will be granted in the same form as payment made at the time of purchase. IF YOU DO NOT REQUEST A REFUND WITHIN THE 30 DAYS OF PURCHASE DATE (REFUND PERIOD), YOU FORFEIT ELIGIBILITY FOR A REFUND. Within 30 days of purchase date, refunds will be returned equaling 85% of your total course license(s) tuition fees paid. REFUNDS FOR CLAIMED PARTICIPANT LICENSES WILL NOT BE GIVEN. The remainder of your payment will be retained to cover expenses for processing registration and removing the held license(s) from our system. In the case of an applied discount, the 85% refund will be based on the total course license(s) tuition fees paid. We reserve the right to make changes to the refund policies at any time.
      On cancelling entire or portion of bulk purchase licenses - Requests to cancel portion (number of license(s) requested to be cancelled) of purchased course license(s) must be made by email or in writing within 30 days of purchase date using the contact information found below. Refund amount will be calculated as below -
      Refund amount = (number of license(s) requested to be cancelled * per slot applicable price) * 85%
      The remainder of your payment will be retained to cover expenses for processing registration and removing the held license(s) from our system. We reserve the right to make changes to the cancellation policies at any time.
    • Substitutions (Transfer of license)
      Purchasers of bulk licenses may request substitutions in the course using the contact information below. Substitutions may be granted one time for each license issued to the purchaser. No transfers will be honored once a course participant has claimed license/initiated training by accessing course content. We reserve the right to make changes to the substitution policies at any time.
    • Extensions
      Course length averages 4 months and is considered complete once the live skills session is completed. Course extensions will be granted on a case-by-case basis. If you wish to receive an extension in the course, you can request it in writing using the contact information below. We reserve the right to make changes to the extensions policies at any time.
    • Email Opt-in Policy
