Glycosylated hemoglobin gives a measure of average blood glucose level over the preceding 3 months. An impressive body of evidence supports the claim that lowering A1c reduces micro- and macrovascular complications.

A1c goal:

  • A minimum goal for A1c is <7%.
  • However, the optimum goal for each individual is to achieve an A1c as close to normal (<6%) as can be safely achieved without severe hypoglycemia.

How often should A1c be measured?

  • At least two times a year for a stable, well-controlled patient (A1c <6%).
  • Every 3 months in patients who do not have a normal A1c.
