Performed once per year, the fasting lipid panel includes total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and VLDL.

Current goals are:

  • LDL <100 is a minimum goal unless the individual has known vascular disease or multiple uncontrolled vascular disease risk factors (e.g., early family history of heart disease, smoking, albuminuria itself suggests vascular disease in diabetic patients), then LDL goal should be <70 mg/dl. However, if the patient is over age 40 and has an additional major cardiovascualr disease risk factor, s/he may benefit from being on a statin in particular, regardless of the LDL concentration, based on recent studies.
  • TG <150
  • HDL >50 (F) or >40 (M)
