Quiz

For Type 1 DM, patients should receive their first dilated eye exam within 3-5 years of diagnosis and annually thereafter.  Type 2's should receive the first exam at the time of diagnosis and annually thereafter.

While standard recommendations call for annual exams, more frequent exams may be necessary as determined by the ophthalmologist (especially if the patient’s retinopathy is progressing).

Ask about the patient’s last exam (date and results), the date of follow-up with the eye professional, and any recent changes in vision.
